Description
A Fine Huon Gulf drum, Huon Gulf, Morobe province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical style, the drum with simple handle opposite a complex openwork midrib, the entire drum covered with intricate patterns in classical style for the region in incised forms. The word “Kako” cut into the surface, apparently long after the drum was created.Huon gulf drums (and those of the islands in the Huon area between the Papua and New Britain) are elaborately carved, and the design elements approximate the types found on personal effects such as armbands and the better known feast bowls of this region. This drum admirably captures the style and character of Huon Gulf carving.Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1980. The drum measures 29 inches tall x 7 inches wide.
