Description
A fine and old Era River Drum. Era River area, Papuan Gulf; Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea.Of typical form, the drum of conical form tapering to a stylized crocodile’s mouth, the terminus incised with typical faces in Era River style, often found on Gope boards. Fine old patina.The drums of the Era River, like their Western Kerewa counterparts are narrow with no handles and terminate in a crocodile/fish head-form, and bear designs that are repeated Iconographically on boards and canoe ornamentation. Acquired by Marc Seidler from George Craig, C. 1981, Field collected by Craig prior to 1966. The Drum Measures 24 x 5 inches.
Condition
Fair, well used, stress fractures in drum body, appear to be old and stable. Drum Head intact.
