Description
An Era River Bioma figure. Era River, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea. Of typical form, the two-dimensional figure with classical features for the region, with arms in cruciform shape and emerging from the torso, the body with simple patterning, the legs descending straight from the hips, of foot missing. Red and white pigments. Likely Mid 20th century.Bioma figures were utilized in displays in the men’s house relating to feats and headhunting. It is likely that they had numerous functions. There is some evidence that they may have also been either images or instantiations of Imunu spirits. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1983. Measures 31.5 inches tall x 7 inches.
