Description
A Fine and Rare Lowland Ok Cuirass; Yangkom/Aekyom Language groups, Upper Fly River/Ok Tedi river, Far Western border of Western Province, Papua New Guinea. The body armor of heavy woven rattan in the form of the upper torso, the bottom rounded and the upper edges flanged; tightly knotted and rigid. Cuirasses of this type were collected by D Albertis on the Ok Tedi River in the late 1870s and were worn on both sides of the PNG/West Papua border as far West as the Digul River. This type of cuirass would not stop arrows at close distance and was more likely for use in close skirmishes involving clubs or daggers as well as to protect against short stabbing spear jabs. As the area is heavily forested and the inhabitants lived in huts built high into the trees, arrows shot from a distance would likely be repelled or at least would fail to deeply penetrate the abdomen from this type of armor. Acquired by Marc Seidler from George Craig c. 1980s, collected c. 1960 or earlier on the Upper Fly River. Measures 21 inches tall x 17 inches wide.
