An unusual Highlands drum with carved designs. Western Highlands (?), Papua New Guinea.Of somewhat unusual form, the drum with an uncharacteristic handle, narrow band of incising to the center, and raised design in the form of a pig to one side. Fine patina indicating traditional age, use and wear.This unusual drum deviates from most of the Highlands types by both the handle and overall flaring of the top and bottom. Its attribution is by no means certain.Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1981 from Rudi Ceaser. Measures 28 x 7 inches. Drum head intact.
