Description
A Rare Old Double Hunstien Garra figure - Field collected by John C. Edler, C. 1988 in Papua New Guinea. This carved wooden mask like sculpture was kept within ceremonial houses among the Bahinemo people (Hunstein mountains) sacred objects known as garra or gra were kept. With 2 forms of figures created this piece consists of a series of hooks surrounding a mask like projection. This style is associated with water spirits, the hooks identified with catfish whiskers. The Garra served as hunting totems, their supernatural power assisting in the capture of game & also serving a role in male initiation ceremonies. Provenance: John C elder Collection, collected in situ in 1988. Measures 38 x 7 inches.
