A Fine Lower Sepik/Ramu River Canoe prow. Madang province, Papua New Guinea. Of Typical form, the prow with classically carved ancestral spirit head at the apex, the topknot of hear becoming the attachment to the canoe, the nose wide and powerful with pierced septum. Overall fine patina of age. Decorated canoe prows are found virtually all over New Guinea and West Papua and served to decorate and protect the canoe as well as magically empower it with ancestral energy.
