Description
Two Lower Sepik canoe prows. Lower Sepik River, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea.Of classical form, the prows with well-carved ancestor head in mask-like style terminating in a reptilian head possibly depicting a stylized crocodile; fine signs of age, use and wear. Lovely old examples.Decorated canoe prows are found virtually all over New Guinea and West Papua and served to decorate and protect the canoe as well as magically empower it with ancestral energy. The prows of the Lower Sepik often recall the carvings of figures found on statues, masks and house posts in this region. Acquired by Marc Seidler C. 1981 from Rudi Ceaser. The largest is 36 inches long x 13 inches wide, the smaller is 34 inches long x 10.5 inches wide.
