Item Details
Description
Informative lot of fifteen issues of an unidentified war periodical titled 'Alligator Scuttlebutt', collected by U.S. Marine Sgt. Charles Edward Wright, who saw service in the Marshall Islands, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Saipan aboard the U.S.S. Pensacola, then during the Korean War, he participated in the seizure of Inchon and the Wonsan-Hungnam-Chosin campaign. The periodicals, presumably printed aboard the U.S.S. Pensacola for her sailors, all date from 1944-45, and many bear detailed content about the war's major battles. Some notable passages include: '...troops of the 1st Marine division on Peleliu Island sealed off several more caves...the few remaining Japanese were kept under continual pressure...bombed and strafed two small coastal vessel and five barges off the coast of Iwo Jima....American troops within the northeastern edge of Aachen 'had made some progress in house to house fighting'...More than twenty-six Japanese warships were sunk or heavily damaged in the three-pronged naval battle of the Philippines..the most crushing defeat ever administered the modern Japanese Navy...Iwo was in the spotlight of the Pacific War, but the far flung battlefront thundered from end to end...' Much more content. Some partial issues are also included. The lot is also sold with a thick brown scrapbook compiled by Wright, bearing eight pages of affixed news clippings of the Pensacola's service and general wartime updates, followed by roughly 20-30 blank pages. Heavily worn, notable chipping, covers dislocated. The lot also includes numerous military records of Wright's, which indicate he received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, China Service Medal, and others during World War II, then received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Korea in 1950, for which he was presumably discharged.
