Description
[WORLD WAR II]. USS Bluefish submarine kill pennant. Rochester, NY: Carlton Company.
27 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. printed canvas pennant, with black texturized detail (occasional creasing, a few pinholes at upper edge).
The pennant features a blue fish holding a bottle labeled "Emu Bitter Ale W.A." and thumbing its nose, superimposed over a torpedo alongside the slogan "We Made 'Em Blue!" The top border consists of illustrations of the ribbons for the Navy Cross, Good Conduct Medal, Silver Star, Navy-Marine Corps Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal. The left and right borders consist of 2 Imperial Japanese Navy (1889-1945) flags and 9 NisshÅki/Hinomaru Japanese flags.
The USS Bluefish (SS-222) was a Gato-class submarine that served from 1943 through 12 February 1947. In nine war patrols, she sank 12 enemy ships, including one destroyer and one submarine. She was recommissioned 7 January 1952 before once again being decommissioned on 20 November 1953.
Although the original recipient of this pennant is unknown, it was possibly presented to an officer of the vessel.
