DOZAN OF KYOTO
A Satsuma-Ware Baluster Vase
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Decorated in enamels and gilt, the body with two large lobed panels, one enclosing a probable Chinese legend depicting an attendant holding a tasselled fan attached to a long pole decorated with a plume accompanying her mistress, sumptuously dressed, greeting a troupe of bare-breasted and barefoot female arhats (Buddhist disciples), one holding a child, several birds flying above, the second panel enclosing a characteristic bird-and-flower scene of a pheasant amongst flowering peonies and daffodils growing on the banks of a river, reserved on a ground of chrysanthemum heads on a shippo-tsunagi (linked-cash) ground, above two comma-shaped panels and a fan panel enclosing repeated formal flowers and a helmet resting over arrows, the shoulder with scattered chrysanthemum heads; signed on the base in gilt Nihon Kyoto Dozan tsukuru within a square reserve beneath the Satsuma crest. 30.2cm (11 13/16in) high.
