Group of American and English Majolica Fish-Form Jugs
Comprising a George Morley & Co. gurgling-fish jug and another, circa 1880, naturalistically modeled as a gaping mouth fish with pink gill and brown fins, the tail curling to form a handle, on an oval gassy mound base, unmarked, red painted B, height 11 inches; an English cobalt-blue ground leaping fish jug, circa 1880, each side relief molded with fish jumping above seagrass and waves, the handle molded as a fish, yellow spout and rim, the underside mottled yellow, unmarked, height 8 inches; a British Majolica fish-form jug, circa 1875, attributed to Adams & Bromley, of squared shape, naturalistically modeled with gray and white scale, brown fins and yellow lip, ochre-yellow underside, unmarked, height 7 1/2 inches; and a Morley & Co. polychrome leaping fish jug, circa 1884-91, naturalistically modeled as an upright gaping fish splashed in brown, blue and green, its curving tail forming the handle, black printed uppercase mark and MAJOLLICA, Wellsville, O.(hio), height 6 1/2 inches.
Note (George Morley & Co. Gurgling-Fish Jug and Another): George Morley was a Staffordshire potter who established a manufactory in East Liverpool and Wellsville, Ohio. Along with his sons the firm was in production from 1879-1891.
