Group of American, English and French Majolica Plates and Dishes
Circa 1868-80
Various makers, types and subjects, comprising a Josiah Wedgwood & Sons cobalt-blue ground 'Fruit' dessert plate, pattern no. M3020, indistinct date code AO-, circa 1880, the center molded with a cluster of fruiting branches and leaves about a large coconut, resting in a stave basket, within a yellow line rim, impressed uppercase mark and pattern number, and blue painted cypher, diameter 9 inches; a Griffen, Smith & Hill 'Begonia Leaf' plate, circa 1875, naturalistically molded as five conjoined leaves, forming a central well, impressed GHS monogram mark and star cypher, diameter 9 inches; a Josiah Wedgwood & Sons turquoise-ground 'Fruit' dessert plate, circa 1880,
the center molded with a cluster of fruiting branches and leaves resting in a stave basket, within a yellow line rim, impressed uppercase mark and numerals, perhaps 7 and 2, diameter 9 inches; a Griffen, Smith & Hill Etruscan Majolica blue-ground 'Fruit' plate, recorded as model D18, after a Wedgwood pattern, circa 1880, molded with two sprays of fruiting raspberry briar and a central branch of yellow apple or quince, resting in a stave basket, within a yellow line rim, impressed GSH monogram and Etruscan Majolica medallion mark, diameter 9 inches; a Creil et Montereau French Barbotine turquoise-ground asparagus plate, circa 1880, naturalistically molded as a three overlapping asparagus spears resting on a large leaf beside a recessed well, an additional cluster of five tips on the turquoise ground at the rim, impressed indistinct mark and 5, black painted W, diameter 9 inches; and Two Josiah Wedgwood & Sons tortoise-ground scallop shell form dishes, date codes UVW and GBX for 1868 and 1869, of Whieldon type, naturalistically modeled as a large scallop shell, splashed in green, brown and ochre, the reverse border similarly splashed, impressed uppercase marks and cyphers, length 8 3/8 inches.

Note (Josiah Wedgwood & Sons Cobalt-Blue Ground 'Fruit' Dessert Plate): Part of a dessert service, the 9-inch plates are made with a minimum of twelve diverse clusters of fruit. Argenta and cobalt versions are known with cobalt-ground examples being the rarest. A close variation of this model was produced at Sarreguemines.
