Description
Pre-Columbian, Ecyador, La Tolita- Tumaco c.350 BC.350 AD. Size 6 5/8 inches high. A fine hand-formed figure depicting a seated Shaman with both his arms at his chest resting on a staff. He is wearing a shawl over his shoulders, a very elaborate headdress, spool earring and incised cuff bracelets. The figure has incised leg scarification. The facial features are prominent with almond shaped eyes, wide nose and large parted lips and open mouth. The ear spools and nose have holes for organic decorations such as feathers. There is a semi-working whistle on the reverse side of the head.. This type of figure was typical for use in ceremonies and funeral burials.
