Five Civil War-Era CDVs of Patriotic and Domestic Scenes
Choice Collection of Five (5) Scarce and Popular Patriotic Civil War-Era Carte de Visites, each with Historic and Domestic Homefront Scenes, one by Thomas Nast, Very Fine or better.
Collection of 5 Individual Cartes de Visites, each measuring 2.5" x 4", various places, ca. 1862-1865. Each CVD featuring scenes of Civil War Patriotism and Homefront Domesticity, most including depictions of women and children. Some light even tone, with light wear and one with clipped corner tips. This collection is above average in scarcity being a highly popular group including:
1. "To Arms! Freeman to Arms!", ca. 1862. Based on the patriotic song by Giovanni Sconcia of the same name, image depicts a proud "Drummer Boy" with his right arm raised. Caption reads: "entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by W.M. Hunt in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Mass". Published by J.P. Soule, Boston, MA.
2. "The Domestic Blockade", ca. 1863. Based on an original Engraving by the famed printmaker Currier and Ives, by Thomas Nast. Image shows a Girl who carries a Civil War American Flag and Boy "Playing War" behind an overturned table as a Woman (likelytheir mother) angrily waves a broom at them as if attacking. Caption reads: "entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1863, by Thomas Nast, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York".
3. "Morning", ca. 1863. Based on an original piece by G.G. Fish and Albumen Photograph CDV by J.P. Soule of Boston, MA. Image depicting a lovely young woman in revealing dress, looking skyward. Caption reads: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by John Sowle, in the clerk's office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts".
4. "Home on a Furlough", ca. 1864. Based on the original Engraving by notable artist, John Sartain. Features a domestic homecoming scene in which a husband in his Union Army uniform returns from the Civil War and is greeted by his family. Small blue ink area on the reverse.
5. Old Abe, "The New Picture of the Eagle", ca. 1865. Choice fresh full-color Engraving of "Old Abe," the Bald Eagle mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Regiment during the Civil War. Text on verso declare this picture as having been sold, "for the benefit of the Great Sanitary Fair in Chicago, which opens May 30, 1865". (5 items)
