Rare Collection of 10 Carte de Visite Photographs of Civil War Era Entertainers, Including (6) of Pioneering "Blackface" Minstrels: Daddy Rice, Dan Bryant, Neil Bryant, Eph Horn, George Christy, Eph Horn and J.E. Green, affixed to 4 early album pages, measuring 6-1/4" x 8", and each identified in period brown pen below each CDV, all Very Fine.
TEN rare original Carte de Visites of 19th century historic Black History related Civil War era performers, including six scarce photos of popular "Blackface" Minstrels, the album pages have wear and some small edge nicks. The Carte de Visite Photographs include:
Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice, (1808-60), considered the "father of American Minstrelsy", his character "Jim Crow" became the namesake for the infamous laws that enforced racial segregation in the South.
Dan Bryant, (1833-75), scarce photo of him in blackface, seated and holding a tambourine. He was a member of Bryant's Minstrels, who began performing in 1857 and continued until the early 1880's. The song "Dixie" was first performed by the Bryants during an 1859 concert.
Neil Bryant, brother of Dan Bryant, and also with Bryant's Minstrels.
Photo of 3 popular minstrel performers posed together: Eph Horn, (Evan Evans Horn, 1818-77), George Christy, (1827-68), one of the leading Blackface performers during the early years of Minstrelsy in the 1840's; he performed with Christy's Minstrels; and Dan Bryant.
J. E. Green - with Duprez & Green's Minstrels, known as "Mocking Bird Green" for his Mockingbird Song, in which he imitated the calls of the mockingbird.

This collection also includes a CDV of famous Opera Singer Adelina Patti, and two of Actress Isabelle Hinkley (one in costume), and a "Mr. Copps". (10 items)
