Item Details
Description
Outstanding carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Major General Irvin McDowell and his staff on the steps of Robert E. Lee’s Arlington home in 1862. McDowell can be seen standing facing left, on the mansion’s steps with eight other officers. Another officer can be seen holding a horse.

Lee’s home, Arlington, was a desirable prize for the Union army, particularly during the early parts of the Civil War when Lee was thought a traitor for casting his lot with the Confederacy. McDowell and his staff certainly seem quite pleased to be there in this photo.

The photograph bears the back stamp of a Philadelphia photographer, McCallister. Condition as shown.

[Antique Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Albumen, carte-de-visite, CDV, Tintype] [Civil War, Union, Confederate] [Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Slavery, Slave, Abolition, Emancipation Proclamation, 13th Amendment]
