Description
R.E. Lee PSA Slabbed Signed Type I CDV

A period carte de visite depicting celebrated Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) in civilian dress, signed by him as "R.E. Lee" in the lower right corner. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified authentic as an example of a Type I photograph. The black and white albumen photograph is mounted on a stock card, the outermost layer of which is back stamped "Boude & Miley, / Lexington, / Va." With traces of old tape extending across the top and bottom (including over the signature) recto and verso. Expected wear including scattered spots, else near fine. The carte de visite measures 2.5" x 4.25" while the slab measures 4.25" x 7.25."

The aging former military commander is shown wearing a dark suit and tie, and positioned at 3/4 profile facing right. Lee was photographed at the Lexington, Virginia photo studio of Boude & Miley at the corner of Main and Nelson Streets sometime between 1866-1870. Michael Miley was a Civil War veteran who had fought for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. He partnered with local businessman John C. Boude to create the eponymous studio. Boude & Miley issued numerous views of Robert E. Lee and other Confederate heroes like Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Jubal Early.
