The aging former military commander is shown wearing a dark suit and tie, and positioned at 3/4 profile facing right. Michael Miley was a Civil War veteran who had fought for the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. He partnered with local businessman John C. Boude to create the eponymous studio. Boude & Miley issued numerous views of Robert E. Lee and other Confederate heroes like Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, Jefferson Davis, and Jubal Early.
