Description
Arlington House, now the National Cemetery, was the home of Robert E. Lee and his wife, a descendant of Martha Washington. With the beginning of the Civil War, Lee left to become General and Commander of the Southern forces. His wife, remained in their home until just before it was occupied by The Yankees. In flight, she took this pair of 18" tall clear glass girandoles with prisms with her. They got damaged, as she quickly fled. There are parts and damaged pieces to accompany this lot. They have descended in the family, part of the collection was donated to Mt. Vernon by the Chapin/Kreck descendants, with this being kept. There is a Notarized Letter of Provenance from the family concerning this historical object.
