1753 Rhode Island Land Transfer Document
1p, measuring 12.75" x 16.5", Providence, Rhode Island, dated November 24, 1753. A land transfer document in which John Ross sells land in Gloucester, RI to Samuel Phetteplace of Gloucester for £50. Signed and sealed by Ross, and witnessed by Rufus Smith and Richard Steere. The document has flattened folds, with some separations at the center which have been partially repaired with archival tape. Toning and foxing throughout. Chipping at edges. Boldly signed.
Samuel Phetteplace (1735-1813) went on to serve during the Revolutionary War as a Private under Captain David Burlingame. Richard Steere (1707-1797) was the Town Clerk of Gloucester for 60 years and the Town President for 40 years. He signed a petition against lotteries in 1733, represented Gloucester in the RI General Assembly (1736-1766), was Justice of Common Pleas for 34 years, and was Chief Justice from 1782-1784.
