"To the Opponents of Slavery Extension" 1856 Republican Party Campaign Document
Pamphlet/Booklet
A pale blue folio sheet from the first national campaign of the Republican Party and its organized Congressional Committee. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 8" x 10", Washington, D.C., dated August 30, 1856. Addressed "To the opponents of slavery extension", the document additionally prints a list of Republican Association campaign publications. This section also includes eleven "In the German language", indicating the significance of the immigrant group to the Republican coalition. Featuring darkened edge toning and light creasing, with minor tears throughout. Else, very good. Scarce.
In the top paragraph, Senator Benjamin F. Wade, Committee Chairman, urges "the importance of a thorough and systematic circulation and distribution of Documents, Speeches, and Essays, setting for the true issue presented in the Presidential Canvass? If the people are supplied with documents favoring the principles of Free Speech, Free Labor, Free Kansas, Free Men, and FREMONT," then there will surely be an "auspicious result in the momentous struggle in which we are involved."
In June of 1856, the Republican National Convention had selected John C. Fremont as their presidential nominee. As this pamphlet suggests, the party would run on a campaign based mainly on opposition to the Pierce Administration, and the expansion of slavery into the West.
Benjamin Franklin Wade (1800-1878) was an American lawyer and politician most known for his leading role among the Radical Republicans who served as a United States Senator for Ohio from 1851 to 1869. Notably, in 1868, had the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson led to a conviction in the Senate, Wade would have become president for the remaining nine months of Johnson's term.
