Description
An engraving proof depicting a portrait of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) at center, surrounded by a decorative border of stirring patriotic vignettes and a facsimile signature at bottom. On thick, double-weight paper. Expected surface wear including isolated corner wrinkles and scuffs, else near fine. The actual plate size measures 5.375" x 7.125" while the entire sheet measures 14" x 9.875."
The central oval-shaped portrait of Lincoln was based on an original photograph associated with Mathew Brady, and engraved by John Chester Buttre of New York City, ca. 1864. William Momberger designed and executed the border, which depicts (from clockwise): a group of emancipated slaves; an allegorical representation of Peace; a warlike figure slaying the multi-headed dragon of Rebellion; and a group of figures near a wagon, possibly returning soldiers.
