A very rare rhinoceros horn staff or sceptre, A very rare rhinoceros horn staff or sceptre, mid-19th century, Tsonga or North Nguri, South African, carved with the head of a chief, the shaft drilled for a wrist thong, 39.5cm long, together with a modern stand (2) Literature: The pipe bowl is very similar in style and mimics the carved head-ring of the rhinoceros horn sceptre in K Conru, 'Art of South East Africa', 2002, no. 104; the head of a staff on the present example exhibits very similar features and is ascribed to the Tsonga, North Nguni in Ubuntu Exhibition, 202, Paris, Musee National des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie, no. 38; a combined headrest-walking staff has the same compact treatment in form of the ovoid head in Johannesburg Art Gallery, Brenthurt Collection catalogue, no. 299.
