Description
This is a very rare wooden staff carried by Burriones, indians familiar with the strict order and rules of the processions, and used to smack, stab and otherwise control the attendees to march and proceed as tradition dictates. Today such wooden swords are brightly painted, however this sword was collected in situ in 1967 by Paul Hendricks while traveling and researching the native Tarahumara indians, living in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. The staff was painted in mineral pigments and measures 40.6 inches long. A rare ethnographic artifact from this disappearing culture. Ex Museum of Oddities, Metamora Indiana, and was part of the permanent display since the 1980's until 2019 when the Museum closed. ( there is no display stand)
