Description
This is a very rare and old Tabwa Anti-Witchcraft staff. Carved wooden staff with two spirit faces looking in both directions and other various magic accoutrements. Staves of this sort were used by the Tabwa and documented by Dean Ripa in field photos as having being part of an Anti-Witchcraft cult. The chief diviner would lead a procession of the person affected by the witchcraft and use the cane, as a means to either look through (in the case of openwork top canes) or to magically inform them of the violation of ancestral taboo from the attachments. Provenance: Field collected by Dean Ripa among the Tabwa and Rungu, C. 1979/1980.
