John Hancock PSA NM 7 Handwritten Receipt Signed on Behalf of Uncle

A handwritten receipt, all in the hand of Founding Father John Hancock, recording a shipment of goods delivered to his uncle, Thomas Hancock. Signed in part by Hancock, who has written his uncle's name, "Thomas Hancock." Approximately 160 words in Hancock's hand. 1p, measuring 9" x 4.5", Boston, dated June 9, 1762. With flattened folds, along with edge toning and chipping. Bold and clear handwriting. Overall, very good. PSA Slabbed and Graded NM7, measuring 9.75" x 13" overall.

The document state that a shipment of axes, shovels, an anvil, spades, bricks, a bell, feet boards, tile boxes, cask nails, stationary, carpentry tools, corn, hay, and harnesses was received by Thomas Hancock, to be delivered to the Port of Halifax unto William Jeffray Esq., Shopkeeper to the Board of Ordnance. Countersigned by Samuel Cooker.

Thomas Hancock (1703-1764) was an American merchant, politician, and uncle of statesman John Hancock. Around 1730, Hancock entered into a partnership with prominent Boston merchant and slave trader Charles Apthorp, eventually becoming one of the leading merchants in the city. He soon expanded his business to a wide variety of mercantile sectors and became the proprietor of the House of Hancock, which exported rum, whale oil, and fish, built ships, and imported books and luxury goods. In 1744, when his brother died, Thomas Hancock took in his nephew, John Hancock. Thomas and his wife, Lydia, had no children of their own, so the couple doted on the boy who was raised as Thomas' successor. In his later years, Thomas suffered from several disorders, leading him to turn over control over the majority of his business affairs to his nephew.
