Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, St. Johns, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), ca. 975 to 1300 CE. A hand-coiled pottery canteen with a mesmerizing Chaco style black-on-white linear and geometric pattern. The narrow spout mouth prevented evaporation; the knobbed lugs on the upper shoulder perhaps secured a stopper plug in place or served as attachments for straps. Anasazi pottery was created by coiling clay and smoothing the surface before painting, then finally firing, and their pottery was an invaluable utilitarian item for storing agricultural goods as well as a beautiful commodity for trading.
