Prehistoric Anasazi Chaco Bichrome Pitcher Spirals
Item Details
Description
North America, Native American, southwestern United States, Arizona, Sanders, Witches Wells, Ancestral Puebloan / Anasazi, Chaco style, ca. 975 to 1150 CE. A charming pottery pitcher, skillfully hand-made to present a bulbous body, a slanted shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. A lovely, trifurcated handle connects the shoulder edge to just below the rim, while the body is embellished with black on white decoration comprised of several bands of horizontal striations and spiraling motifs. Pottery played an important role in Anasazi culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Anasazi pottery was made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. This petite pitcher is a lovely example created via this technique! Size: 5.5" Diameter x 5.8" H (14 cm x 14.7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, purchased in 2016; ex-Mark Brady collection, found at Witches Well Ranch, Sanders, Arizona, USA
