Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Chaco Tradition, Gallup Type, ca. 980 to 1150 CE. An attractive pottery pitcher hand-painted with black on white decoration of mesmerizing motifs. The rotund body boasts a thick, horizontal band of repeated crosses surrounded by nested triangles, parallel striations, and checkered patterns, while the ribbon-form handle connects shoulder to rim displaying rhomboid and dotted designs. Stepped decoration additionally adorns the rim of the tapered spout. Pottery played an important role in Anasazi culture and included both utilitarian and decorative pieces that could be traded with neighboring communities for food or other goods. Anasazi pottery was made by hand coiling clay, then smoothing the surface and painting with designs before firing. This pitcher is a lovely example created via this technique! Size: 6.9" Diameter x 6.6" H (17.5 cm x 16.8 cm)
