Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A beautiful and very large black-on-white pottery bowl with geometric motifs on the interior and exterior walls. Presenting a hemispherical form, the bowl rests on a rounded base with tall walls that curve gently inward to an annular rim. The interior has a fantastic decorative program with a ring at the central basin surrounded by an abstract design of checkered, zigzag, steppe, and linear motifs. Alternatively, the exterior displays a black band around the rim with a triangular pattern just below. Vessels in this tradition were coated with a pearly gray-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon. The artisan who made this bowl probably lived in a cliff dwelling like those seen at Mesa Verde National Park, where houses were reached by ladders. A beautiful example!
