Native American, Southwestern United States, New Mexico, Socorro County, Coyote Creek region, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloans ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A charming effigy grayware vessel in the form of a zoomorphic creature with a crescent shaped body. The surface is white slipped and painted with black linear and spiraling motifs, a broad spout and strap handle emerge from the animal's neck. Although the creature is vague and open to interpretation - and affectionately slug-like in posture, this might be a badger, the snout and head contain the characteristic black stripes. Badgers were symbols of fierceness and hunting prowess, although this reclining effigy suggests otherwise! Size: 6" L x 2.25" W x 4" H (15.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 10.2 cm)
