Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Nutrioso Creek, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi), ca. 1150 to 1325 CE. A stunning hand-built pottery jar with a black-on-white motif. The mesmerizing interlocking stepped patterns cover nearly the entire surface of the spherical body, save for the base, which is slightly flattened, providing a stable areas to rest on. The base of the neck is then encompassed by 2 circles with the innermost showing a gap known as the "spirit break," believed to metaphorically release the spirit of the potter or any other spirits that may be associated with the materials that make up the pot. The neck is labeled with the find site, "Neutroso (Nutrioso) Creek Arizona", a region where nearly 50 different Pueblo sites were identified ranging from Pre-Pueblo I to Pueblo III periods. Size: 7" Diameter x 6" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
