Description
(CIVIL WAR--MARYLAND.) The Lexington of 1861. Hand-colored lithograph, 9 x 13 inches; toning, wear to top margin touching border. New York: Currier & Ives, 1861 Depicts the reception afforded in Baltimore to the 6th Massachusetts Infantry, among the "First Defenders" units heading to Washington after the fall of Fort Sumter. They were met by a mob of secessionist civilians hurling bricks, and barely escaped. The title, "Lexington of 1861," suggests that this was the true beginning of the fighting in Civil War. The remainder of the caption reads "The Massachusetts Volunteers fighting their way through the Streets of Baltimore, on their march to the defence of the National Capitol, April 19th, 1861. Hurrah for the Glorious 6th." None traced at auction since 2001.
