Description
Wonderful non-dug example of a two-piece brass button as worn on the uniforms of the cadets at the Virginia Military Academy (VMI) in Lexington, VA during the Civil War era. This handsome coat-size button is of two-piece construction with a braided rope border. It retains over 98% of original gold gilt on the face. The circular, 21-mm brass device is in excellent condition and exhibits a seal that shows Virtus dressed in a helmet standing victoriously over the prostrate form of Tyranny. Large raised block letters “C A D E T ” are shown above Virtus, while same size letters “V.M.I.” rest below her form. Back side slightly tarnished, with straight shank. Strong backmark of “D. EVANS & CO. ATTLEBORO” within a ribbon. A fine V.M.I. school cadet button in excellent addition.
