Description
A beautiful sixth plate ambrotype of a young Confederate soldier, likely from North Carolina or Virginia. He wears a burly military jacket with a series of buttons running along its length. Importantly, the subject sits in front of possibly the most famous painted backdrop in southern Civil War photography: the “Gabled House" backdrop. While the photographer's identity who used this backdrop is still unknown, most identified subjects in known examples are Virginia and North Carolina soldiers.
The image is delicately hand-colored with pastel green and pink. Housed in a thermoplastic case.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate] [19th Century Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, carte-de-visite, albumen, cabinet card]
