1860 United States Presidential Election Campaign, Douglas & Johnson, Unique Hand-Drawn Patriotic Display with Rare Design American Flags, Banners and Slogan "LIBERTY & UNION" and "Hail to the Chief", accomplished in Pencil, (Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Douglas), Choice Very Fine.
The most important American Presidential election was held on Nov. 6, 1860, in which the Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and the Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, ultimately resulting in the American Civil War. This Unique Hand-Drawn Pencil Patriotic Display measures about 4" x 6.25" on period wove paper. Signed in period brown ink on reverse with Artists name, "J. Emastus Lester / Brown University" below. The artwork is very well accomplished and appears totally contemporary to the 1860 election. Reverse side blank other than the signature. A small water stain in the bottom right margin edge of slight notice. A fabulous Civil War Era Patriotic Presidential Campaign item, excellent for display.

The electoral split between Northern and Southern Democrats was emblematic of the severe sectional split, particularly over slavery, and in the months following Lincoln's election (and before his inauguration in March 1861), seven Southern states, led by South Carolina on Dec. 20, 1860, seceded, setting the stage for the American Civil War (1861"65).
