1777 Massachusetts-Bay Revolutionary War Broadside Announcing Pay and Bounty Money For Enlisting Soldiers
January 1, 1777 Broadside from the "State of Massachusetts-Bay" To Pay a 20 Enlistment Bounty to Revolutionary War Continental Army Soldiers, Fine.
Original Printed Broadside headed: "State of Massachusetts-Bay. In Council, January 1, 1777," and it establishes the Enlistment Bounty Payment of 20 Pounds to each soldier enlisting for three years in one of 15 battalions to be raised, "in Addition to the Pay and Encouragement given by the Continental Congress...". This Broadside measures 12" x 5.5" and has internal fold splits, soiling and an early paper tape reinforcement placed on the blank back. There is scattered toning and foxing, but very clear text. Signed in print at the bottom by John Avery, as Deputy Secretary, and Samuel Freeman, as Speaker.
