Description

Two Boston Broadsides for $100 Bounties Due to Civil War Veterans

A pair of broadsides advertising $100 Bounties due to soldiers who had enlisted for three years in the U.S. Army. One measures 6.75" x 5.25" (sight) and the other measures 7.75" x 9.75", Boston, ca. 1866. Published by Freeman Emmons, Pension Attorney. Both broadsides have been matted and framed to the overall size of 14.5" x 23.5". Both with varying degrees of flattened folds. The first has tears at the lower margin which have been repaired with tape. Minor toning and soiling throughout. Overall very good.

The first broadside states that any soldier who enlisted for three years between April 11, 1861 and December 24, 1863 or who served between April 12, 1864 and July 18, 1864 who was discharged due to injury is entitled to the bounty of $100.

The second broadside lists the names of soldiers from the 2nd and 3rd Vermont Regiments of 1861 who are entitled to the bounty. The list includes the place of residence for each soldier and also includes the caveat that "if the soldier is dead, this $100, if unpaid, is due to his widow, even if remarried, his child, father, mother, brother, or sister…"

Bounties such as these were dispensed following the passage of the Equalization Act on July 23, 1866. This Act provided an additional bounty of $100 to all honorably discharged soldiers (or the widow, minor children or parents of the soldier) who served no less than 3 years and were entitled to or received a bounty under the earlier laws. During and after the Civil War there were a plethora of "attorneys” who acted as “Military Claim Agents”, offering to advise and help veterans and widows file the proper applications (all for a small fee, of course).
