Civil War Medal Group- Irish Soldier 19th MA POW

Item Details

Description

Five piece medal group belonging to Richard Meagher, Co C, 19th Mass Inf, 2nd Div, 2nd Army Corps. Meagher was a 44-year-old laborer of Irish descent who was captured at Petersburg, Va in June 1864, spending ten months in Confederate prisons.

Group includes:

Massachusetts membership medal from the National Association of Union Ex-Prisoners of War, with two prison bars for Libby and Savannah.
19th Massachusetts regimental badge consisting of a miniature hunting horn with “19th Mass” at center, suspending a small marble knapsack with white trefoil on reverse (2nd Div, 2nd AC.)
GAR membership medal with ribbon.
Coin silver watch fob with engraved letter “M” on obverse and applied white enamel Mass state seal on reverse, with leather strap.
Silver pin with “Richard Meagher” engraved on top scroll, suspending an unknown device with three intertwined initials. On reverse is engraved: Jan'y 24. Meagher was a 44 year old draftee who was captured at Petersburg, Va in June 1864, spending ten months in CS prisons. Condition is very good to excellent.
