Description
American Civil War silver ID eighteenth corps (variation) badge belonging to Private John Cobler, of Company K, 55th Pennsylvania Infantry. Pin presents engraved obverse on arms of eighteenth corps badge "J. Cobbler , Co. K 55th Pa. Vol." and measures 1.25" x 1.25". Reverse presents T-bar pin. Surface of badge exhibits toned patina. John Cobler (1843-1893) enlisted on September 30, 1861 at Bedford, Pennsylvania and was mustered into Company K, of the 55th Pennsylvania Infantry regiment on November 5, 1861. He re-enlisted on January 1, 1864 and was discharged on August 30, 1865. He is buried in the Trinity Reformed Church Cemetery in Osterburg, Pennsylvania. As is sometimes seen in named Civil War badges Cobler's name has been misspelled Cobbler. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
