Description
Kearney shield and suspension identification disc belonging to Private William McCutcheon of Company B, 105th Pennsylvania Infantry. Kearney shield pin of nickel features raised profile portrait of Maj. Gen. Kearney with text "MAJ. GEN. KEARNEY. KILLED AT CHANTILLY SEPT. 1. 1862" from which is suspended a circular disk (30mm in diameter) with the obverse stamped "Wm McCUTCHEON/ Co. B/ 105 REG/P V/ BROOKVILLE Pa" On the reverse is a cast raised leaf design with "WAR OF 1861" at the top. Beneath this is stamped in small letters engagements that McCutcheon had participated in when he received this badge. Those engagements include "Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, 7 Days Before Richmond, Malvern Hill, Bull Run, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville.". William McCutcheon was mustered into Company B, 105th Pennsylvania Infantry as a private on October 23, 1861. McCutcheon was wounded in shoulder on July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded again and reported missing at Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864. On June 8, 1864 he was captured on the Pamunkey River and sent to Andersonville Prison Camp in Georgia. McCutcheon was paroled from Andersonville and died in Charleston, South Carolina in December 1864. This item was detailed by Edward Linder Jr. in his article "ID Disc and Kearney Shield of Pvt. William McCutcheon, 105th Pennsylvania." that appeared in the North-South Trader's Civil War Journal, Volume 33, No. 2 (2008) page 30-31. This item appeared in the June 25, 2009 Heritage Signature Civil War Auction (#6024) as lot number 57063. Lot accompanied by 3-ring binder of research related to Private McCutcheon.
