Description
Pair of American Civil War artifacts related to the 50th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry including; 1.) Infantry "US" belt plate (dug) with reverse solder scratched in Civil War period identification"JH JH LEVAN 50 PA.". Also on reverse in manuscript ink inscription "DUG 3/29/94, WILDERNESS, W-636". Plate exhibits evidence of being buried for some time with slight degradation to surface of plate and solder. Scratched inscription is clear. James H. Levan (1842-1911) enlisted and was mustered in on September 9, 1861 as a private in Company C, 50th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was captured at the battle of Spotsylvania and exchanged. Levan was promoted to sergeant of Company C on November 26, 1864 and immediately transferred to Company I, of the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry and commissioned a captain. He was mustered out on July 30, 1865 at Georgetown, Washington DC. He is buried in Minersville Union Cemetery, in Minersville, Pennsylvania. 2.) Small identified New Testament printed by the American Bible Society in 1862. Testament measures 4.5" x 3" and present red leather binding. Interior of front cover presents ink manuscript inscription "B.C. Christ, Col. 50th Regt PV 1864". Cover exhibits wear with bend and lacks closing strap. Benjamin C. Christ (1822-1869) was enlisted and commissioned on April 21, 1861 as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was mustered out of the 5th Pennsylvania Infantry on July 25, 1861. Christ was then commissioned a colonel in the 50th Pennsylvania Infantry on July 27, 1861. He was breveted a brigadier general on August 1, 1864. During the Civil War he was wounded three times. He mustered out on September 30, 1864. He is buried in the First United Methodist Church Cemetery, Minersville, Pennsylvania. Pair of artifacts accompanied by business card with manuscript notes on reverse detailing history of artifacts signed by Civil War artifact dealer Ron Stonelake of Spring City, Pennsylvania. Christ testament accompanied by large 3-ring binder of research materials related to General Benjamin Christ. Provenance: Gary Wolfer collection.
