W. McKinley Large Assassination Memorial Tribute
A memorial tribute to 25th U.S. President William McKinley (1843-1901), undated but ca. 1901. Printed in gilt lettering on black matte paper mounted onto a chipboard backing, with a vintage black and white photographic print of McKinley at the center. Pencil inscribed verso. Expected wear including isolated closed tears, minor chips, and loss found along edges and corners. Minor foxing and past exposure to moisture. A scuff runs across McKinley's portrait, with minor loss to the area around his collar. Else good to very good. 18.875" x 17."
The memorial tribute is crowned with a banner at the top reading, "In Loving Memory of Our President." The McKinley portrait is flanked by the text of Sarah Flower Adams's 1841 Unitarian hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee" at left; and by the verses of Anglican and later Catholic priest John Henry Newsom's 1833 hymn "Lead, Kindly Light" at right. Details about McKinley's assassination are found underneath a 2-verse poem entitled "His Will be Done, not Ours," the title a reference to McKinley's reported last words.
The manufacturer of this print is unknown, but similar memento mori tributes of William McKinley were produced by the Home Art Picture Company of Chicago, Illinois during the same period.
William McKinley served as president between 1897 and his assassination in September 1901.
