Description
North Africa, Morocco, Fez (Fes) region, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous pottery bowl sitting upon a ring-form foot, the lovely vessel presents thick walls that rise to a wide, circular rim over a shallow basin. The interior is skillfully glazed with beautiful abstract designs comprised of interlacing linear and foliate motifs in cobalt blue, green, and teal on a white ground and outlined in black. The abstract and often geometric patterning is influenced by the cultural blend of Islamic tradition and Berber tribal symbols. Bowls like this one are formed on wheels, then placed out to dry, fired, and painted. Once painted, the pieces are fired a second time to seal the glaze. A piercing through the ring foot enables these bowls to be displayed on a wall as decoration when not in use. Size: 11.65" Diameter x 3" H (29.6 cm x 7.6 cm)
