**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Ghana, Akan peoples, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-built pottery head that perhaps depicts an ancestor with slit-form eyes and puffy lids, a slender nose with impressed nostrils, a gently smiling mouth, and pierced ears. The thick neckline gradually expands to form the profile of the head, and atop the forehead is a plug-form coiffure. Size: 3" W x 3.5" H (7.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

This is a fragment from a larger pottery figure. Minor nicks and abrasions to face, coiffure, and neckline, with light encrustations, and a few stable hairline fissures. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old museum label on verso.
