Description
Roman, early Imperial Period, ca. 1st to early 2nd century CE. A beautiful example of a squat jar formed from translucent, yellow-green glass. The vessel presents with a slightly concave base with a rough pontil scar, a bell-shaped body with tapered walls, and a flared rim bearing a ground lip; this may have been to accommodate a lid. A single trail of similarly colored glass is applied around the body to create a set of concentric rings with terminals that cross as they stretch upwards towards the rim. Soft and attractive layers of rainbow-hued iridescence are scattered across the composition. Size: 3" W x 3.5" H (7.6 cm x 8.9 cm)

Condition
Minor abrasions and weathering film to surfaces and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Light but visible rainbow iridescence throughout.
