Description
Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A stunning free-blown transparent glass vessel, of a globular form, created from a pale-sage-hued glass. The vessel is comprised of a stable, concave base with a rough pontil, a spherical body, rounded shoulders, a wide mouth, and a collared rim which became a bit off-set during the forming or cooling process. Five horizontal bands of rigaree encircle the upper body, a zigzag line with triangular areas accentuates the lower body, and a pair of free-form trail handles conjoin shoulder to rim, all in gorgeous emerald-green. The transparent nature of this vessel is exceptionally rare, with the view through the other side being impeded only by the thin rigaree bands embellishing the exterior. Size: 4" W x 3.875" H (10.2 cm x 9.8 cm).
