Roman Glass Jar w/ Indented Walls & Great Iridescence
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A beautiful jar of a compressed form, free-blown from translucent glass of light blue-green hues. The vessel is defined by a concave base with a smooth pontil scar, a spherical body bearing six concave, unevenly spaced indentations, a lightly corseted shoulder, and a broad neck surmounted by a thick rim. Thick layers of rainbow-hued iridescence glint in the light and vibrantly accentuate the soft turquoise colors of the vessel. Size: 3.125" W x 3.125" H (7.9 cm x 7.9 cm)

For a strikingly similar example without bodily indentations, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 81.10.77.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

#154185
Condition
Minor abrasions to base, body, neck, and rim, with micro-bubbling within glass matrix, flaking to some iridescence, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and excellent. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits and stunning rainbow iridescence throughout.
