The first image is a black and white photograph, measuring 9.25" x 9", no place, undated [Ca. 1975]. The image shows crewmembers of the Apollo-Soyuz international space mission, along with their backups, seated at a long press table, believed to be taken during a Press Conference during the Apollo-Soyuz Project. The postcard features a portrait of Tereshkova along with a 10k stamp of the first woman cosmonaut. Blank verso, with some postage stamps. Minor toning and soiling to the postcard. Boldly signed.
The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project was a joint U.S./Soviet space mission which launched in mid-July 1975. The collaborative mission, comprised of two Soviet cosmonauts (Commander Alexey Leonov and Flight Engineer Valeri Kubasov) and three American astronauts (Commander Thomas P. Stafford, Command Module Pilot Vance D. Brand, and Docking Module Pilot Donald "Deke" Slayton) entailed docking an Apollo spacecraft to the Soyuz 19. The mixed crews conducted scientific experiments together, like blocking the Sun with one spacecraft while the other photographed the solar corona. The extremely successful Apollo-Soyuz Test Project set the stage for future collaboration, including today's International Space Station. It also signaled a remarkable warming of relations between two hardened Cold War enemies.
Valentina Tereshkova (1937-) is a former Soviet cosmonaut and the first and youngest woman to have flown to space. Her first solo mission was on the Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963.
