Description

Merton Simpson Inventory # 8943 A tall ancestor idol carved from a very dense heavy wood with reddish pigments and elaborate designs, classic facial features and overall style. According to literature, large standing figures, carrying a cup,( in this case two cups) were charms of beauty and luck inhabited by ancestral spirits. These statues participated in the coronation of chiefs and at royal funerals. The sculpture measures 28 inches tall ( 30 inches tall on professional custom display stand) Provenance: Merton Simpson Gallery, New York.
